Racial Justice Research Intern (New York, NY)

Please forward widely...

Racial Justice Research Intern (New York, NY)

The Applied Research Center and ColorLines Magazine are seeking a Fall 2009 Racial Justice Research Intern.

The Applied Research Center (ARC) is a home for media and activism on racial justice, built with rigorous research and interactive technology. We are currently seeking interns to join a dynamic team of researchers, activists and journalists conducting research and analysis of public policy issues with a racial justice lens.

ARC's work is concentrated in three program areas: Strategic Research, Leadership Action Network, Strategic Partnerships and Media, which also publishes ColorLines , the national newsmagazine on race and politics.

The Research Intern reports directly to the NY Research Associate. Intern job duties would include conducting background research, fact checking, interview assistance and transcription and interviewing for investigations on racial justice issues such as welfare, immigration and criminal justice.

An intern should have the following basic qualifications: strong research and writing skills, ability to work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, skill at working independently. A knowledge of and interest in politics and race and some experience with political and social justice work are a plus. In addition, the Research Intern should have experience with database research, conducting interviews, be a fast writer and have a basic familiarity with some race, immigration, criminal justice and economic trends. Multi-lingual skills are a plus.

Interns will work at least 10 hours per week. The internship is unpaid but we will work with students to arrange college credit and will supply interns with a monthly metro card.

Please email resume and one non-academic writing sample no longer than 800 words to Seth Wessler (swessler@arc. org)
