Organizational Description

Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice, Los Angeles, is a non-profit organization that organizes clergy and lay leaders from the faith community to establish justice for the working poor of Greater Los Angeles. In collaborative relationships with top economic advocacy groups, labor unions, religious groups, and educators, CLUE LA plays a unique role in the fight for Economic Justice by bringing a creative spiritual voice and strong sense of moral authority to worker organizing campaigns. As part of collaborative efforts, we also call upon the ancient traditions and moral values of the faith community to shape conversation and strategy for critical local, state, and federal legislative efforts that seek to transform and improve the lives of working people. 1) Exciting Opportunity for a Faith Community Organizer with a Strong Commitment to Economic Justice

Position Description: CLUE LA is currently seeking a part-time, short term contracted Clergy and Faith Community Organizer to join our faith-rooted organizing team. Like others on our team, this Community Organizer will help us bring religious leaders from across the city into our work by developing strong area committees prepared to act on behalf of workers and their families in their struggle for dignity and good jobs. The Organizer will work under the supervision of the Program Director, and be a part of regular strategy sessions with campaign partners and religious leaders.

Position Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Organizer is responsible for:

  • Leading efforts for faith community outreach, recruitment and education;
  • Aggressively building committee membership and developing committee leadership on an ongoing basis;
  • Planning and leading regular committee meetings;
  • Coordinating activities with coalition partners;
  • Coordinating the content and logistics for public events & large-scale mobilizations;
  • Work cooperatively and creatively with other members of the CLUE LA organizing team on various projects assigned by the Program Director that may fall outside the organizer’s primary work.

Qualifications: Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to economic justice and the labor movement, with a willingness to work long hours and weekends when necessary- even during religious holidays. Must be capable of establishing deep and numerous relationships and maintaining those relationships while building a new committee, and have a gift for strategic thinking and planning. Must be flexible and open minded. Must be a motivated self-starter able to work independently, with excellent reporting skills, as well as excellent analytical skills, written, verbal, communications and computer skills. Applicant should have familiarity with various communities of faith, must have documented experience and strong skills in community organizing, outreach, and engagement skills, and have a proven track record in leading a team.

*Driving your own car required. Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred, but one of many factors.

2) CLUE-LA Seeks Communications Specialist

Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE-LA), the leading faith-rooted economic justice organization in Los Angeles, is seeking a Communications Specialist. This is a new position in a growing organization and an excellent opportunity for someone in the field to expand her or his skills.

Position Description

This position requires roughly ten hours per week on average. The Communications Specialist, supervised by the Executive Director and working closely with the entire staff, is responsible for the development and implementation of CLUE-LA’s communications strategy and promotion of CLUE-LA’s campaigns and programs.

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Communications Specialist will:

· Create biweekly newsletter utilizing Constant Contact to communicate campaigns and happenings of CLUE-LA.

· Initially, work with web designer to redevelop www.cluela.org, facilitating the gathering of web content and organizing the layout for the new site.

· Continually maintain and develop new web content

· Continually maintain Facebook and other new media as necessary, assessing the value of new platforms to further the message and reach of CLUE-LA

· Develop and produce organizational printed materials, including brochures & fundraising materials

· Occasionally serve as media spokesperson

Salary Dependent On Experience.

Qualifications

Internet savvy and computer literacy required. Applicants must be committed to a vision of economic justice and support the labor movement’s critical role in creating systemic change in Los Angeles. The Communications Specialist will work on communications deadlines; s/he must be willing to be flexible with hours. Excellent written and verbal skills are critical. Knowledge of Constant Contact is ideal but not required. Applicants must have a strong teamwork ethic and ability to multi-task.

3) CLUE-LA Seeks Event Planner for the Seventh Annual “Giants of Justice” Breakfast

Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE-LA), the leading faith-rooted economic justice organization in Los Angeles, is seeking an Event Planner. This is a short-term position in a growing organization and an excellent opportunity for someone interested in expanding her or his skills.

Position Description

Beginning in February and ending in late May, this position will grow from ten hours per week to roughly 25 hours per week in May. The Event Planner, supervised by the Executive Director and working closely with the entire staff, is responsible for the development and implementation of CLUE-LA’s annual fundraising event, “Giants of Justice.”

Event Details

On May 27th, 2010 at 7:30am near downtown Los Angeles, CLUE-LA will hold its annual Giants of Justice event. This year, it will be our first attempt at a breakfast, which we believe will be more worker-friendly and more cost-effective. We will honor the following four people/institutions:

· Bishop Mary Ann Swenson: Resident Bishop of the California Pacific Conference of the United Methodist Church and trailblazer in her commitment to economic justice within the UMC community.

· Father Michael Gutierrez: CLUE-LA Board Member, Pastor of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Baldwin Park (third largest parish in Los Angeles) and outspoken leader in the struggle for immigrant rights.

· Holy Nativity Episcopal Church, “Institutional Giant Award:” A leader in the pursuit of justice for workers associated with LAX, Fr. Peter Rood and Deacon Margaret McCauley have led the charge.

· Kabira Stokes, “Emerging Giant Award:” Currently a grad student at USC in Public Policy, Kabira has taken her commitment to justice beyond her crucial roles at Councilmember Eric Garcetti’s office and with Young Progressive Majority, choosing to participate in Civil Disobedience with CLUE as part of a living wage drive for the LAX community.

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Event Planner will:

· Oversee and execute the timely creation and distribution of “save the dates” and invitations to the event.

· Work closely with honorees to gather names of potential sponsors.

· Work closely with venue and vendors to ensure logistical smoothness.

· Envision and direct content for tribute journal.

· Assess value of a silent auction; execute auction if necessary.

· Coordinate volunteers at the event.

· Work closely with staff to schedule program.

· Direct the board with a solicitation campaign for tribute ads and tickets.

· Create honorary committee for event.

· Keep record of RSVPs, track contributions and determine seating chart.

· Track journal copy and coordinate with printer.

· Other tasks necessary for a strong event with a lucrative outcome.

Qualifications

The Event Planner must have experience with planning previous events.
