InnerCity Struggle is seeking an experienced Community Organizer to coordinate our Familias Unidas/United Families (FaU) component. FaU builds a powerful base of parents and community members who are organized to work toward educational justice in public education. Application Deadline: Wednesday, September 28th, 2011 InnerCity Struggle (ICS) is a social justice, community-building, and membership led organization based in Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles, El Sereno and Lincoln Heights. ICS promotes safe, healthy and non-violent communities by organizing youth and families from the Eastside to work toward social justice. ICS was founded in 1994 as an independent center to build community leadership to improve the quality of life in East Los Angeles. InnerCity Struggle is seeking a Civic Engagement Outreach Coordinator with voter engagement experience to work on a 3-week civic engagement program in the East Los Angeles area. ICS’ Civic Engagement Program will begin on Sunday, Oct 16th and culminate on Saturday, November 5th. Voter contacts will be conducted by phone and door to door canvassing. The Civic Engagement Outreach Coordinator will supervise 20 paid volunteers and will manage phone bank and door-to-door outreach operations. The Coordinator will work a total of 6 hours per day and 30 hours per week. The hours will be scheduled: Sunday – Thursday, 3:00 pm – 9:00pm Saturday, 8:30 am - 2:30pm Outreach Coordinator responsibilities:

InnerCity Struggle is seeking individuals with voter engagement experience to work on a 3-week civic engagement program in the East Los Angeles area. ICS’ Civic Engagement
Program will begin on Sunday, Octotber 16th and culminate on Saturday, November 5th.
Voter contacts will be conducted by phone and door to door canvassing.
Phone bankers /Canvassers will work a total of 5 hours per day and 25 hours per week.
The hours will be scheduled:
Sunday – Thursday from 3:30pm – 8:30pm
Saturday, 9:00am – 2:00pm
Phone Banker responsibilities include:
- Attend a mandatory orientation
- Arrive to the phone banking location on time
- Phone bank during the designated times
- Canvass during the designated times
- Follow ICS’ Civic Engagement Program Script to engage voters
- Identify and document voter responses to the ICS Civic Engagement Program questionnaire
Qualifications:
- Bilingual English/Spanish a must
- Licensed driver with own transportation preferred
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to use a computer to document voter responses
- Ability to conduct a Civic Engagement questionnaire over the phone with East Los Angeles voters
- Ability to conduct a Civic Engagement questionnaire door to door with East Los Angeles voters.
- Interest and willingness to engage with voters from East Los Angeles
- Experience in voter engagement

Exciting Opportunity for a Community Organizer
with a Commitment to Economic Justice
The Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) has been at the forefront of the economic justice movement in L.A. since 1994. LAANE is known for its broad-based labor/community coalitions and its combination of organizing, research, communications, and policy development. LAANE led the movement to pass a Living Wage Ordinance in the city of L.A. in 1997 and continues to advocate for progressive policies that benefit low-wage workers and low-income communities. Campaign Description: LAANE is currently seeking a full-time community organizer. The community organizer will help develop and implement a strategy for community engagement and leadership to win justice for workers in the construction industry. This campaign seeks to:
· Achieve economic justice for low-wage workers in the construction industry by ensuring that public and private subsidies in major construction projects benefit workers; and
· Achieve local hire in the construction industry for low-income communities of color in Los Angeles.
Position Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Campaign Director, the community organizer is responsible for
· Leading efforts for community outreach, recruitment, education and grassroots political action in Los Angeles communities;
· Coordinating activities with coalition partners and building coalition membership;
· Coordinating logistics for public events & large-scale mobilizations; and
· Connecting organizing work with research and public policy staff on the campaign.
Qualifications: Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to economic justice and the labor movement. Also needed: willingness to work long hours and weekends when necessary and ability to work independently. Skills required:
· Strong community outreach, organizing and engagement skills,
· Excellent analytical skills, written, verbal, communications and computer skills,
· Proven track record in community organizing and mobilization.
Driving your own car required. Fluency in Spanish a plus.
Terms of employment: LAANE’s salary and benefit standards are very competitive. Salary will depend on qualifications and experience. Full health benefits; pension; generous time off; parking. Friendly, team-oriented working environment.
